Habitat for Humanity

I got started in construction with summer jobs while I was in college. I was excited to discover that we could use helping people through Habitat for Humanity for team building and skills development. So far we have worked on 6 separate projects. Employees who organized the events got to demonstrate leadership skills and all participants got recognition. The effect has been very good for morale and productivity. Over the years many of the participants have considered these events highlights in their lives.

Coaching Soccer

My own kids got me into coaching soccer. I have continued this for inner city kids in Wilmington, DE. I enjoy giving these children a chance to learn the leadership, skills and courage of organized sports. I discovered that their parents did not know how to be “soccer moms” and “soccer dads.” So we worked together to make the entire soccer experience a strengthening activity for children, their families and even their communities as the soccer games became a uniting event.

Private School Consulting

I got involved with helping Catholic schools administration when I was asked to assist in financial strategies through budgeting. This led to discussions on how to plan for current costs, income, reserves for deferred expenses and fund raising. I have helped several administrators, not only in the annual budget exercises, but also with strategic events such as facility renewal and equipment replacement. To help with change management I advised that the administrators regularly keep the parents informed of the status and issues of the school budget as part of a communications plan. As a result, one school decided to increase tuition to build reserves to address significant modernization projects.
